"Depeche will make another record" says Gahan

Good news for Depeche Mode fans, as the promotion rolls on for their upcoming album, "Playing The Angel". In an interview given Monday, Dave Gahan explained that being in Depeche Mode is better than it has been for the past 15 years and that this is the first time since the mid-eighties that he is certain that Depeche Mode will make another record. And it seems he actually means it.

Dave, who's debuting as a songwriter for Depeche Mode with three songs on the new album, co-wrote his contributions with Mode's drummer-for-hire, Christian Eigner. Mute boss, Daniel Miller had flown to New York last year, and heard Dave's tapes and liked them, unlike "Paper Monsters", which Dave says Daniel "had a hard time with"... then it was decided that the album would have three Dave songs and the rest will come from Martin.

Together, the pair of them had written 15 songs, from which producer Ben Hillier chose the three that fit the album the best. Unlike previous producers, Hillier is not a fan of Depeche Mode by any means. Until his involvement with "Playing The Angel", Hillier had never heard any Depeche Mode album all the way through. And, with the exception of "Playing The Angel", he propably still hasn't. Before the sessions started Hillier was sent a package with the entire Mode catalogue - a package, he revealed as the sessions drew to a close, he had barely bothered to open...

Rather than taking this as an insult, Dave puts a positive spin on it. Hillier's apparant unfamiliarity with Depeche meant that he didn't have any pre-conceived notion of what a Depeche Mode record should sound like, something that might have been a disadvantage to their last two records, both produces by self-proclaimed Mode fans. Looking back, Gahan is far from pleased with the results of their collaboration with the two previous producers. Dave said that during the Exciter sessions Mark Bell just tinkered with computer in the corner, Fletch read magazines, Martin was more interested in making dj tapes in the another room than his own album and Dave was just bored out of his mind. He feels that Ultra and Exciter were the best albums they could do at that given time, but now, looking back, both albums give the impression of a three-legged-dog, ie. stumbling quite a lot, but still getting there at the end.

Now he feels that Hillier really became the fourth leg for them to stand on. Hillier is an old-school coach-type producer who pushes the band. "It came as a shock to Ben, how little we usually do in the studio," explains Dave. So Hillier forced the band to be more active, and created an atmosphere in which all parties were invited to let ideas flow and contribute to the mood.

A me non suona strano, visto che se qualcuno si ricorda, nel 2000 i DM firmarono un nuovo contratto con la EMI che li legava per tre album in dieci anni. Inoltre in molte interviste pre-PLAYING THE ANGEL Fletch affermava che dopo EXCITER ci sarebbero stati non più di uno o due album. E' anche noto che il prossimo album dei DM uscirà nel 2010 e che a seguito di quest'ultimo album ci sara' un terzo "best of" contenente uno o due singoli inediti e forse un ultimissimo tour.
E' inoltre noto che dopo PLAYING THE ANGEL Dave farà uscire un nuovo album solista e un nuovo tour da solista.
Nel frattempo usciranno le ristampe rimasterizzate dei dischi dei DM da SPEAK & SPELL sino a SONGS OF FATIH AND DEVOTION e i DVD di LIVE IN HAMBURG e SOME GREAT VIDEOS 81-85, entrambi con materiale extra.

I problemi saranno dopo il 2011, per adesso godiamoci questi sei anni di DEPECHE MODE!

A proposito, nel tour 2005-2006 ci saranno ancora Peter Gordeno alle tastiere e Christian Eigner alla batteria.
Per le coriste non si sa ancora nulla.

In un intervista Dave ha detto che quello che sta per uscire sarà il più bell'album dei Depeche...speriamo sia vero...ecco un piccolo estratto..:

"Prima di iniziare a lavorare a quest'album, sentivo che mancava qualcosa nella nostra discografia," dice Dave Gahan dei Depeche Mode riferendosi al loro undicesimo album di studio, "Playing The Angel". E così il gruppo elettro-pop più sovversivo e famoso al mondo si è riunito, come il cantante sottolinea, per registrare il loro miglior album.

Nell'intervista Dave dice che è il momento migliore per i Depeche Mode da 15 anni a questa parte e che "certamente" (da prendere con beneficio d'inventario) faranno un'altro disco.
Dave ha scritto i tre brani inclusi in PTA con l'aiuto del batterista Christian Eigner (e anche di Andrew Philpott, n.d.r.).
Il totale dei brani registrati dovrebbe essere a quota 15 (quindi oltre a Free che è la prima b-side, ce ne dovrebbere essere altre 2!).
La curiosità è che Ben Hillier non aveva mai ascoltato un album intero dei DM e che ha rivelato al termine delle registrazioni che l'intero catalogo dei Mode che gli era stato consegnato per essere ascoltato, era stato a malapena aperto.....
Dave sottolinea come nel caso delle registrazioni di Exciter ci fosse una situazione ben diversa da ora: Mark Bell (il produttore di Exciter del 2001) passava molto tempo nell'angolo con il computer, Fletch leggeva il giornale, Martin era nell'altra stanza a preparare i nastri per i dj-set, e Dave era solo con i suoi pensieri.
Guardando indietro Dave dice che Ultra ed Exciter a quel tempo erano quanto di meglio avessero potuto fare, ma che ora il discorso è tutto diverso.
Dave dice che Hillier è un produttore vecchio stampo e che ha portato una ventata di novità all'interno della band lasciando che tutte le idee confluissero facendo si che ci fosse un maggiore spirito di collaborazione.
E' un Dave molto molto positivo (a discapito delle tematiche dell'album) e allo stesso tempo sincero come sempre (nel bene e nel male!).

Bhè, sarebbe strano (e inutile) che un musicista/scrittore/... presntando la sua ultima fatica dicesse "sì, è ok ma in passato ho fatto di meglio".

non mi pare che prima di Exciter abbia dichiarato "beh si, l'album che sta per uscire sarà mediocre..."
sono dichiarazioni di circostanza
sarei felice di sbagliarmi ma dubito serissimamete che siano stati in grado di fare meglio di SOFAD e Violator. e mettiamoci pure i due album venuti prima

cmq dopo il 2010 cominceranno ad avere una certa età, non possiamo certo aspettarci che continuino a fare album e soprattutto che girino il mondo per i concerti. per me è già tanto avere un tour fra 5 anni

E cos'hanno Dave, Andrew e Martin? Se lo possono permettere i Rolling Stones e Springsteen di andare in giro per il mondo a 50 e passa anni, e non se lo possono permettere loro? Secondo me siamo un pò troppo pessimisti...

Di certo se fosse lo stesso Gore a sbilanciarsi positivamente sulla nuova creatura allora sarei più ottimista.

Cmq per me è più importante il Feedback di un ADMIN o di un KATULLO, di sicuro sintonizzati con i miei gusti... Dave Gahan è attratto più dalle sonorità Rock, per questo il suo concetto di "migliore di..." va preso con le pinze.

Hanno ritrovato tantissima ispirazione e quindi me lo potevo anche aspettare. Sul sito amazon tedesco ci sono già i commenti di chi ha ascoltato già tutto l'album, tutti gli danno 5 stelline e dai numerosi punti esclamativi che si trovano nei commenti sembrerebbe essere l'ennesimo capolavoro... tanto capolavoro che forse un solo CD non bastava. Staremo ad ascoltare ancora a lungo e sempre...
