The CD single format seems to become rather obsolete as more and more bands are switching to download singles instead. Whereas many indie bands already embraced the format as being a rather handy tool to release material we see more and more established bands taking over the habit. In the recent past bands such as Recoil or yet Sigur Ros started selling digital only singles in different digitalk formats with 1-track singles, 2-track singles and multi-track releases. It is expected that iTunes will also soon offer audio and video singles in one which will increase the possibilities. And more bands are quitting the CD format, The Cure for example will release their newest single as a download only and it seems that also Depeche Mode's Dave Gahan will go for download only to promote his newest solo album.


e riprendendo il nostro caro Giacomo, la cosa che mi lascia perplesso è... ste foto sembrano fatte da uno fotografo non di primo livello, poi l'album è prodotto dai tre stessi più Hoffer, poi il primo singolo è digital, non si sa ancora nulla di un tour eventuale, e in definitiva manca poco al lancio dell'album... beh... ma lo vogliono promuovere sto disco o no?

cmq io non sono tanto d'accordo con la decisione di eliminare i singoli fisici dai negozi. anche bjork l'ha fatto per l'ultimo cd, oltre a non aver promosso in nessun modo nè l'album, nè i singoli, nè il tour. risultato: poche vendite... contenti loro...

ecco cosa ci dice Peter su Hourglass, dopo il suo primo ascolto...

The version I heard only had 10 songs. What happened to the last song, I don't know. Maybe it wasn't included in the playback by mistake; maybe it has been moved from the album to a single as a b-side. I do not know.

I also do not know if the order the songs were played in is the final running order of the album, although the order they were played in did give it a nice flow.

The tracklist for what I heard goes as follows:

1. Saw Something
2. Kingdom
3. Deeper & Deeper
4. 21 Days
5. Miracles
6. Use You
7. Insoluble
8. Endless
9. A Little Lie
10. Down

As you will notice, there's no sign "Love Will Leave" or "Tomorrow" - both of which were mentioned in the press release. I assume, as I said earlier, that one has been removed from the album, while the other has been given the title "Insoluble". If only I had listened more carefully to the lyrics of that song, I might have been able to guess which one it is, but alas, I didn't.

Now, with all that in mind, here goes:

Let me start by saying that this album is not "a little more electronic" than "Paper Monsters". It's ALOT more electronic!! And much edgier too. Those of you familiar with Eigner's solo album will hear his influence throughout the record. He's well and truly put his mark on it.

The opening song, "Saw Something", struck me as being a very atmospheric song. It's got a really nice build up to it, and leads you into the album in a great way. "Kingdom" is pure Eigner with Dave on vocals. A great track... "In your infinite wisdom / You show me how this life should be"... a hint of contempt in Dave's voice over this brooding, dark and upbeat song. Excellent choice for a first single.

"Deeper & Deeper" reminded me of Björk in places. The distorted vocals, the Basement Jaxx-esque intro, rigid programming, edgy sound. "I'm going down now / deeper and deeper / under you skin / you know that it's right". Kind of sums up the track too... it does get under your skin, and it does feel right!

"21 Days" could be a modern day re-make of "Pipeline". Slow, grinding beat with noisy, some times manic guitar stabs throughout, and gospel-esque vocals. This song needs a few more listens to really make sense of I think. It could be great... it was certainly interesting.

"Miracles" is the albums first bonafide miss. "I don't believe in miracles / They happen every day / I don't believe in Jesus / But I pray anyway" sings Dave, in what I thought was a sorely misplaced snoozefest. "Use You" is a welcome wake up call, and more than makes up for the couple of minutes you just wasted. Dry, distorted vocals, in your face and aggressive were some of the words I jotted down. The song has a great energy to it. Really liked this one!

"Insoluble" - the song I suspect was called "Love Will Leave" at some point - is another one that's hard to judge at first listen. To me it sounded like it could have been pulled from "Exciter"... a sort of "Comatose" part two. I know that will likely scare many of you, but I actually dug it. A slow song that was far from boring... can't wait to revisit this song!

"Endless" was the first song where I noticed the lyrics - or rather the delivery of them - kinda of slipping into a "Paper Monsters" universe. They just seemed a little awkward there for a minute, but not too bad. The track is VERY clubby, and is begging to be remixed... and remixed hard! Another one that I think will grow on me as time passes.

"A Little Lie" is probably the hardest song on there to really pin down. It's another one that builds. Lots and lots of electronics swirling around, playing off each other. It goes from being quite minimalistic to being quite grandiose. Very emotional.

For some reason, the only note I made for the song "Down" was sombre, and to be honest I don't even remember what exactly I meant by that. It just kind of failed to register with me. That isn't to say it was a bad song; just that my attention kind of slipped, I guess.

Anyway, there you go. I am looking forward to this album. A vast improvement over "Paper Monsters"; a daring record in some ways; one that I think will even get a few praises along the way from even Martin Gore.

It's a far cry from the garage rock shenanigans of "Paper Monsters", and - I think - even an improvement of what the trio behind it wrote for "Playing The Angel".

Scherzi a parte, questa recensione rende molto bene l'idea di come dovrebbe suonare più o meno questo Hourglass. Grazie Dan per averla postata qua su 013.

Non ho mai ascoltato il disco solista di Eigner, quindi non so cosa aspettarmi...da quel che ho letto, si tratterebbe comunque di canzoni molto d'atmosfera, alcune decisamente minimali. Questa "21 days" che sembra parente odierna della mitica Pipeline già basta ad incuriosire.

Certo che se Peter si sbilancia affermando addirittura:

Resta ancor più inspiegabile la promozione piuttosto sottotono e la mancanza (ad oggi) di qualsiasi sorta di live tour.

Bah, non ci resta che aspettare ottobre...o forse meno, probabile che cominci a circolare sul circuito p2p a breve.

ma vorrei ricordare un piccolo aneddoto: un paio d'anni fa Peter ricordò di aver pubblicato una recensione di PM dopo averlo ascoltato (suppongo positiva) e di essersene pentito un paio di giorni dopo...

Boh, io sono totalmente incapace di capire un disco al primo ascolto, sicuramente lui è molto più bravo di me, ma non mi sbilancerei così dopo giusto un ascolto.
Insomma, vediamo cosa ci dice fra una settimana
